Money Peace Course + Challenge

📌Shine Brighter Together Members: This course is a community inclusion; no additional purchase is necessary.

explore your relationship with money!

Are you tired of being trapped in a cycle of over-consuming?

Make a commitment to yourself to establish a more affirming relationship with money by deciding to freeze your unnecessary spending on specific things for a specific time frame in order to gain more awareness about your relationship with money and begin a process of repairing this relationship to be more affirming and supportive of liberation. This is more than “going on a diet” from shopping but this challenge is a comprehensive way to explore your relationship with money and establish a new and more affirming money ethic.

There is a wealth of exploration and understanding to be done when it comes to money, and this challenge is just one part of the puzzle in repairing and comprehending our relationship with it. This is not financial literacy or a plan to help you save money so you can later spend it on more stuff. Instead, it is a challenge that focuses on self-discovery, exploration, and an opportunity to establish or re-establish a money ethic that is rooted in liberation.

Reframe your relationship with money

What is this course + challenge all About?

An invitation to make a commitment to yourself and establish a more affirming relationship with money by deciding to freeze your unnecessary spending in order to gain awareness about your relationship with money.

You can go on a shopping freeze anytime but doing so without unpacking the roots of overconsumption will lead you back to the cycle of overconsuming. So instead let’s unpack with a challenge that can illuminate self-awareness while offering strategies for establishing a more affirming relationship with money.

What is unnecessary spending?

Well this is where you get to acknowledge that much of what you have (me too) would fall in the category (I don’t need this to survive) so it’s technically in that sense, unnecessary.

But let’s talk about survival—things we need to keep existing on this planet (food, shelter, health care, water, stuff like that). But I think we also need to expand our perception of survival beyond the bare minimum physical needs and consider the needs we have that are emotional, mental, spiritual, relational, and so on. But we’re not over here just trying to survive. We want to live and thrive, yes. And we can acknowledge that we consume things that meet various needs. And that’s okay too. And we often consume in ways seeking to meet needs that could be met in more affirming ways and we often overconsume to compensate for unmet needs.

There’s more to having things than just the mere physical need that they meet. So I’m not asking you to strip down to just the bare necessities because that feels dull, restrictive, and like no seasoning on the chicken. I think we can establish an ethic with consumption that is personal, responsible, and sustainable and it’s gonna take us a lot of patience, practice, and grace to maintain it.

This is a lifelong journey and what I know for sure that it’s necessary!

Our communities depend on us collectively working together to figure this out.

So how do we decide what is necessary for living and thriving and what’s just doing too much?

That is why we’re doing this!

an opportunity to establish or re-establish a money ethic that is rooted in liberation.

Our relationships with money are all over the place and unfortunately, this is negatively affecting so many areas of our lives. Here are some suggested parameters to consider:

  1. Why do I want this?

  2. What is this for?

  3. Why do I need this right now—in what ways would this negatively affect my life if I didn’t have this 3 months from now?

  4. If no one saw me with this would I still want it?

  5. What need is this meeting and can this be met in more affirming ways?

  6. Am I trying to impress someone?

  7. Do I feel like I want this because I “earned it”, if so—what did it require of me to earn this and is that sustainable or affirming? What else could I offer myself beyond consumption?

  8. Is this for my comfort, ease or convenience, if so, is this at the expense of others’ well-being? Are there ways to pursue this that are more sustainable?

  9. Do I already have something like this or something else I can use?

  10. If all the stores were out of clothes, what would i wear?

  11. Am I using this to avoid feelings I don’t want to feel or process?

  12. Am I buying this because I like how it makes me feel—are there other more sustainable and affirming ways to feel this?

Rules of engagement

  1. You create the rules of engagement, you decide what you’re going to freeze

  2. You set the time limit, (suggest doing something beyond what is “that’s easy” but not “I could never”)

  3. Notice the shame streets

  4. Practice over perfection
